1. Make Your Hips and Core Stronger
Your knees don’t work all by themselves. They need help from nearby muscles, especially the ones in your hips and tummy (core). If these muscles are weak, your knees have to work too hard, which can make them hurt. When your hips and core are strong, your knees feel better and your whole body moves more easily.

2. Keep Your Knees Moving Well
If your knees feel stiff, the muscles around them can’t work right. Healthy knees need to be able to bend and stretch fully. Sometimes after an injury or surgery, one knee doesn’t move as well as the other, and that can cause problems later. Try to keep both knees moving the same, and don’t be afraid to move them. Being too careful can actually make things worse!

3. Don’t Sit Too Much
Sitting for a long time – at a desk, in the car, or on the couch – can make your knees stiff and tight. It also makes the muscles in your legs shorter and tighter, which pulls on your knees in a bad way. If your knees hurt when you first get up, that’s a sign you need to move more. Try standing up, stretching, or walking around every 30 minutes. Your knees (and back!) will feel better.

4. Wear Shoes That Help Your Knees
The shoes you wear affect how your knees feel. Flip-flops and flat shoes don’t give much support and can make you walk in a way that stresses your knees. Choose shoes that feel comfy and have good support and padding. If you’re going to be walking or standing a lot, supportive shoes can really help.

5. Practice Your Balance
Good balance helps your body move safely and easily. When your balance is off, your knees have to work harder, which can lead to pain. Doing balance exercises or trying yoga can help your knees feel better and stay healthy. You’ll also notice better balance when you’re doing fun things like hiking, playing sports, or walking on the beach.

If you’re dealing with persistent knee pain – even one or two of these strategies could make a noticeable difference.

And if your knee pain is keeping you from being active or doing your favorite summer activities, it might be time to seek expert help. Getting your movement assessed to investigate and identify the root cause – so you can get back to doing what you love – is solid next step for you.
